Details

A stunning Georgian farmhouse in the picturesque village of Blackmore, Essex, has been beautifully restored with replacement timber windows and doors from Lomax + Wood. This comprehensive fenestration project involved the installation of 23 box sash windows, 10 flush casement windows, an entrance door, 6 single doorsets, and a French doorset.

The property owners selected engineered redwood for the replacement windows and doors, finished in classic White RAL 9010 paint, and complemented by elegant oak cills. The installation features high-performance 4/10/4 double glazed units with warm edge spacer technology, providing superior thermal efficiency while maintaining an authentic period aesthetic suitable for this property.

The windows were crafted with 20mm Ovolo glazing bars and Ovolo moulded external liners – details that honor the Georgian architectural heritage of the farmhouse. Modern additions such as concealed trickle vents ensure proper ventilation without compromising the traditional appearance, while polished chrome ironmongery provides the perfect finishing touch.

An interesting feature of this project is the installation of box sash windows in a flush reveal – an authentic historical detail. Unlike most Georgian properties where windows are recessed behind brickwork (a practice following the Great Fire of London), this farmhouse displays an earlier architectural style. The 1709 Building Act mandated windows be set back at least 100mm from façades to prevent fire spread, with further regulations in 1774 requiring sash boxes be hidden behind masonry. These regulations created the slimmer window openings typical of later Georgian architecture. The flush reveal style seen here represents an earlier design approach, emphasising the historical authenticity of this restoration.

The homeowners opted for Lomax + Wood’s Gold Installation Package, ensuring a seamless project delivery from start to finish. This comprehensive service included a professional site survey, with Lomax + Wood taking full responsibility for measurements and specifications.

This Blackmore Georgian farmhouse now benefits from windows and doors that perfectly complement its architectural heritage while delivering superior thermal performance, security, and functionality. Lomax + Wood’s expertise in timber fenestration has ensured that this historic property will be preserved for generations to come, with windows and doors that honour its past while embracing modern standards of comfort and efficiency.
