Lomax + Wood specified for historical refurbishment project

Lomax + Wood, specialists in made-to-order period-style timber sash windows and doors, has designed, manufactured and installed almost 70 replacement sash windows for a historical building in the City of London. Within a designated conservation area, once divided between the City of Westminster and the London Borough of Camden, it has a rich architectural and historic heritage.
Kensington & Chelsea spring sash, double glazed, timber windows by Lomax + Wood have replaced inferior single glazed wood windows which were probably installed some 40 – 50 years ago. Andy Goding, sales director, says: “Our double glazed timber sash windows provide excellent levels of thermal and acoustic performance and the occupants of this building have immediately noticed the improved comfort and warmth while constant traffic noise generated from this very busy one-way street (in the Ward of Farringdon Without) is now almost negligible.
“We had to satisfy local planners with the design and aesthetics of the wooden sash window replacements as it was essential to match exactly the architectural style of the building and replicate elegant and authentic sightlines, and we made a number of samples for their consideration,” continues Goding. “The success of this project is testimony to our design knowledge and our capacity to handle large orders of a specialist nature.”
Ideal for both new build and heritage work the Chelsea & Kensington offers a coordinated range of wooden sash windows; beautiful flush timber casement windows; single, bi-folding and timber entrance doors in a variety of designs. Products are manufactured from sustainably sourced, FSC® Chain of Custody accredited timber in accordance with BM TRADA certification. These high performance products have exceptional U-values, that meet current Part L Building Regulations’, will help to reduce energy consumption and resulting CO₂ emissions. Only high quality clear grade timber is used in the manufacturing process which is engineered for maximum strength and stability. Products are delivered to site and factory-finished with three coats of highly durable micro-porous paint as standard, which is available in white and a choice of fashionable heritage colours, as well as stain.
Acoustic data for Lomax + Wood windows is also now available as tested by BM TRADA. With the acoustic upgrade option the Kensington & Chelsea traditionally designed timber flush casement achieves a market-leading 42db and the box sash 38db. Lomax + Wood also offer customers a bespoke test service to help achieve exceptional acoustic targets for made-to-order timber windows and doors. Only traditional flush joints, rather than Swedish joints, are used in the manufacture of all Kensington & Chelsea products; Swedish joints are prevalent in mass produced modern windows and are considered detrimental to authentic period aesthetics.
This significant red brick building, now providing commercial accommodation, is dominated with beautiful, ornate stone window heads above and around window openings with coordinating bands of stonework which wrap the building. Many of the properties in this area are listed and historically the street was associated with the legal profession. The route originated as a ‘new lane’ created by the Knights Templar from their original ‘old Temple’ on the site of the present Southampton Buildings on Holborn, in order to access their newly acquired property to the south of Fleet Street, sometime before 1160.
